Unemployment rates tumble in Central Mass.
Unemployment rates in Central Massachusetts improved again in May and are down dramatically from May of last year, the Patrick administration said Tuesday.
Greater Worcester’s seasonally unadjusted jobless rate fell from 6.1 to 5.6 percent over the past month, according to the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development. That’s much improved over the 7.5 percent unemployment rate recorded in May 2013.
MetroWest also experienced a decline, from 4.4 to 4.1 percent, with the rate much lower than the 5.5 percent measured 12 months earlier.
Meanwhile, North Central Massachusetts saw joblessness decline sharply from 7.5 to 6.7 percent, a big improvement over the 9.1 percent rate recorded in May 2013.
Statewide, unemployment in May 2014 was 5.2 percent, 0.4 percent lower than in April and 1.7 percent lower than at this time last year.
The number of people employed last month rose by 3,188 (1.15 percent) in Greater Worcester, 982 (0.69 percent) in the Framingham area and 51 (0.08 percent) in the Leominster-Fitchburg-Gardner area. Meanwhile, the number of unemployed in those area dropped by 1,209, 530 and 598, respectively.
