Unemployment Rate Stable As Job Losses Continue

The country lost 95,000 jobs last month but the unemployment rate remained level at 9.6 percent, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Continuing a recent trend, the private sector gained jobs last month, this time about 64,000. That was offset by more than 150,000 government workers being laid off, mostly from the U.S. Census. There are about 14.8 million people unemployed in the U.S.

During the past few months there has also been an increase in the number of underemployed people. These citizens are working part time because their hours have been cut back or because they cannot find a full-time job. There were 612,000 more underemployed people last month, bringing the total to 9.5 million people nationwide.

There are another 2.5 million workers who are not working but are not counted as unemployed because they have stopped looking for work.
