Unemployment Improves Slightly In June

The unemployment rate ticked down from May to June in 17 of the state's 22 labor markets, including the Worcester market.

The unemployment rate stood at 9.6 percent as of June in the Worcester region, according to new estimates released Tuesday morning by the state Office of Labor and Workforce Development. That's down slightly from the May rate of 9.7 percent, but up year-over-year from 9.3 percent.

The statewide unemployment rate was 8.8 percent as of June. That's down from 9.1 percent in May 2010, but up from 8.7 percent in June 2009.

The Boston-Cambridge-Quincy and Barnstable areas added the most jobs over the month. All areas of the state added jobs in construction, leisure and hospitality, and trade, transportation and utilities.
