Unemployment Drops Slightly In August

The nationwide unemployment rate decreased to 8.1 percent in August, and 96,000 jobs were added to the U.S. economy, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

It was the first drop in unemployment since April. The rate rose to 8.2 percent in May and 8.3 percent in July, according to the bureau.

The number of unemployed workers totaled 12.5 million in August, and those unemployed for 27 weeks or more totaled 5 million. Both figures decreased modestly from July, when the numbers were 12.7 million and 5.2 million, respectively.

Despite a lower number of unemployed workers, jobs growth was slower in August than in July, when 163,000 jobs were added. Sectors that saw growth included food services, professional and technical services and health care.
