Unemployment claims rise

The number of Americans filing for unemployment insurance for the first time rose by 10,000 to 324,000 during the week ended June 16, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The four-week average increased to 314,500 from 312,000 during the previous four weeks, the department reported. This year, weekly jobless claims have averaged 319,000. In 2006, the weekly jobless claim average was 313,000, according to the department. The number of people continuing to collect state unemployment insurance benefits increased to 2.52 million during the week ended June 9, the department said. During the previous week, 2.48 million people were said to be collecting.
