The annual ranking by the publication U.S. News & World Report placed UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester as the sixth best hospital in Massachusetts, while Saint Vincent Hospital, also in Worcester, placed ninth.
The two were the only Central Massachusetts hospitals to place in the top 10 in Massachusetts, in the annual ranking followed closely internationally by the healthcare industry and beyond. Nationally, Massachusetts had two hospitals place in the top 20: Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston was ranked the fifth best in the country while Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston was 14th.
UMass tied for sixth in the state with Tufts Medical Center in Boston and placed first as the top hospital in Worcester. The hospital’s ranking was unchanged from last year. The hospital was rated as high performing for delivering quality of care in aortic valve surgery; chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; colon cancer surgery; heart bypass surgery and heart failure.
Saint Vincent dropped from eight to ninth in the state this year, tying with Southcoast Hospitals – Fall River, New Bedford, and Wareham. Saint Vincent was ranked as high performing in care of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, heart attack, heart failure, kidney failure and knee replacements.
