UMass professor wins Nobel Prize for medicine

Craig Mello, a professor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, was named one of two recipients of this year's Nobel Prize in Medicine.

The prize was awarded for Mello's work in discovering a new type of gene.  Mello and co-winner Andrew Fire studied how RNA, thought to only be used as a messanger for reading DNA code and taking it to protein-building machines within cells, did more than just take notes.  Research revealed that RNA could be used to turn off genes, and effectively shut down genes causing harmful conditions in the body.

Winners of the Nobel Prize receive a check for $1.4 million.
