The president of the University of Massachusetts system asked regional business leaders for their help today to support a growing educational network that's flexing its muscles through education and research.
Robert L. Caret told a gathering of about 300 at the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce's quarterly breakfast that their support is especially needed to help the many students who graduate with thousands of dollars of education-related debt - even from public colleges and universities - "and can't find jobs to pay off that debt." He called that "untenable."
"All of us need to be there to help support education," Caret said in his address at the Hogan Center at the College of the Holy Cross.
Caret, alluding to a statewide bus tour he conducted last year shortly after taking office, said the key message he received on that trip was that communities wanted more of what the system has to offer. "UMass is doing what it needs to do for Massachusetts," and that includes a brighter future for the commonwealth.
