The University of Massachusetts ranks second highest in technology licensing among New England institutions, according to an annual survey by the Association of University Technology Managers.
The university said in a statement that the “lion’s share” of the licensing income came from the life-sciences discoveries.
UMass received $40.7 million in licensing income in fiscal 2007, placing it among the top 15 universities in the nation. Much of the money came from new drugs and vaccines, with software, clean energy technologies and educational products also adding to the revenue.
The university said contributions to its licensing revenue came from spin-off companies including Marlborough biofuel company Qteros, based on technology discovered at UMass Amherst, and RXi Pharmaceuticals of Worcester, which is commercializing therapeutics based on work by researchers at UMass Medical School, including company founder and Nobel laureate Craig Mello.
