UMass Memorial Medical Center’s University Campus received only a “C” score in an industry watchdog’s annual ranking of hospital safety. Other area hospitals, including St. Vincent’s in Worcester and Marlborough Hospital, meanwhile, scored an “A.”

UMass Memorial’s Memorial Campus received a “B” on the safety report. Both UMass Memorial Medical Center campuses are in Worcester.

Most MetroWest hospitals scored high on patient safety. Scores for other area hospitals are: Charlton Memorial Hospital, A; Harrington Memorial Hospital, Southbridge, A; HealthAlliance Hospital, Leominster, part of UMass Memorial Health Care, C; Heywood Hospital, Gardner, B; Leonard Morse Hospital, Natick, A; MetroWest Medical Center, Framingham, A; and Milford Regional Medical Center, A.

The Leapfrog Group’s report, released Wednesday, says its Hospital Safety Score grades hospitals on how safe they keep their patients from errors, injuries, accidents, and infections. The scores ranging from A through F are calculated based on 28 measures. A Leapfrog spokeswoman said the report includes acute-care hospitals that report at least 15 of the measures used to calculate the score; some small hospitals don't report enough data to be included.

A statement from Marlborough Hospital Wednesday described the national ratings program as the gold standard for patient safety, compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading patient safety experts.
