UMass Memorial Health has appointed Dr. Lynda Young as board chair and Elvira Guardiola as vice chair of the board of trustees. Young is the first woman to be chair, and Guardiola is the first woman and the first Latina to be vice chair.
The board of trustees at UMass is comprised of 19 individuals who oversee the health system, which is the largest of its kind in Central Massachusetts. With these appointments, the system aims to signal a continued commitment to diversity, according to a Wednesday press release from UMass Memorial.
Young, a board-certified pediatrician, is a professor of pediatrics at the UMass Chan Medical School in Worcester, and previously was chief of the division of community pediatrics at UMass Memorial Medical Center's Children's Medical Center. She chaired the UMass Memorial Medical Group’s board for eight years, and additionally served as president of the Massachusetts Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and president of the Massachusetts Medical Society.
Richard Siegrist was the former chair of the board, serving in the role since March 2017.
“It is an honor to be named chair of the board of trustees for UMass Memorial Health at this critical time for health care, when every action and decision can have a major impact on patients and our communities,” Young said in the press release. “Over the past eight years, I’ve watched the system grow, change, and adapt amid unprecedented industry challenges, and I am excited to support its future in this new capacity as board chair.”
Guardiola, who is the first female and first Latina to serve as vice chair, is an attorney working for the City of Worcester. She was formerly the board chair for the Girls CHOICE Program with the YWCA Central Massachusetts and is a volunteer board member for Central Mass Housing Alliance.
