UMass Memorial infuses patient-sharing technology into care

UMass Memorial Health Care is now using a technology that notifies it when a patient gets care outside of the network.

UMass Memorial Health Care added a technology that notifies the Worcester health provider when one of its patients is treated outside of the network.

The technology, called PatientPing and developed by a Boston company of the same name, notifies its member providers whenever a patient gets cared for at another facility, and sends patient history information, care team contact info and other care instructions to the other facility. The idea is sharing patient information between health networks will lead to better, more efficient care at a lower cost, according to a press release.

“Massachusetts patients will benefit tremendously through this improved care coordination. For example, we’ll avoid duplicative procedures and ensure that patients receive timely follow-up care when they are discharged from the hospital,” Jay Desai, co-founder and CEO of PatientPing, said in a press release.

Early data from the partnership show that many patients who receive care at a UMass Memorial hospital also go to other doctors throughout New England. Since the partnership started, about 200 provider organizations stretched across the region have cared for over 3,000 UMass Memorial patients.
