UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester and Harrington HealthCare’s location in Webster are receiving part of a $2.3-million donation toward Massachusetts coronavirus relief efforts made by the MAPFRE Foundation.
The donation is part of a larger $38 million aid package the foundation will distribute around 27 countries, it announced Tuesday.
The insurance company MAPFRE has locations throughout the world, including in Webster, and its foundation is based in Madrid, Spain.
In addition to UMass Memorial and Harrington, the Massachusetts aid package will go toward Boston Medical Center, the City of Boston, and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
In a Wednesday statement, UMass Memorial Health Care president and CEO Eric Dickson thanked MAPFRE for the donation.Â
“Words are not enough to express my sincere gratitude for this amazing gift from Fundación MAPFRE, who fully recognize that at this moment our frontline caregivers — like those all over the world — are our most valuable resource,” Dickson said. “For us to provide care and relief to the patients suffering from this horrible virus, we need healthy caregivers at their bedside. This wonderful donation will go along way towards helping to protect them.”
