UMass Memorial Health in Worcester has purchased a research and development facility in Holden for $4.25 million, with plans to use the building for support services.
The property, located at 100 Industrial Drive, was purchased in a deal finalized on Thursday, according to Worcester District Registry of Deeds records.
The 9.91-acre property contains a 37,486-square-foot research and development building constructed in 1975, according to Town of Holden property records. The property was given a tax assessment value of $3.49 million in 2024.
“The facility will be used for support services and will not be used for direct patient care,” UMass Memorial said in a response shared by Kristy Lee, media and public relations manager, via an email on Friday. “We look forward to bringing additional jobs to Holden, and the surrounding area and partnering with the local community.”
The property was purchased from Jarrell Realty, a Boston-based entity. The co-owner of the property is listed in Town property records as Alexion Pharmaceuticals.
Alexion is a Boston-based entity that formerly operated at the site, according to a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency facility detail report. Alexion was purchased by AstraZeneca, the global pharmaceutical company headquartered in the United Kingdom, in July 2021, according to a press release issued by AstraZeneca at the time.
