UMass Memorial Health Care is exploring potential “collaborative opportunities” with Springfield-based Baystate Health that could include clinical work, the Worcester-based health care system said today.
A statement from UMass Memorial said the two organizations have signed a non-binding “letter of intent” to explore potential collaborations.
Baystate, which, like UMass Memorial, also a nonprofit health care system, has “much in common” with UMass Memorial, according to a statement released by spokesman Robert Brogna. “As national healthcare reform has brought an urgent imperative to transform the delivery and financing of health care,” the statement read, “health care systems and hospitals across the country are collaborating in innovative ways, finding new efficiencies and better care solutions by sharing clinical experience and intellectual resources.”
However, any collaboration would not affect either organization’s ownership, structure, governance, academic relationships and affiliations, or medical staffs, the statement noted.
Baystate Health serves more than 750,000 people throughout western New England. Services include an academic medical center, community hospitals, medical practices, home care and hospice. The system has 783 beds across four facilities: Baystate Medical Center and the western campus of Tufts University School of Medicine, in Springfield; Baystate Children’s Hospital, also in Springfield; Baystate Franklin Medical Center, in Greenfield; and Baystate Mary Lane Hospital, in Ware.
UMass Memorial said this new agreement builds on a long-existing relationship with Baystate. They have provided each other with support in several areas, including pharmacy, healthcare quality, clinical practice and policy, and infusion medicine.
