UMass Medical School received $161 million in National Institute of Health funding for research last fiscal year, the sixth highest in Massachusetts.
The Worcester school trailed only major Boston institutions like Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, bringing in five times more money than any entity in Massachusetts outside Boston or Cambridge.
Other Central Massachusetts institutions receiving funding last year included Worcester Polytechnic Institute, with $4.7 million, and Embera NeuroTherapeutics, a small Sudbury therapeutics company developing a treatment for addiction, which received $3.8 million.
For UMass Medical School, the funds are a major component of medical research conducted in Worcester. NIH funding for UMass Medical was up from $154 million in the previous budget year and up by one-fourth in five years, from when the school received $130 million in 2013.
The largest NIH funding recipient was Massachusetts General Hospital, with $466 million, followed by Brigham and Women's Hospital, with $389 million. Statewide, entities received a total of nearly $2.9 billion in funding.
