UMass Medical School research flat at $280M while system’s spending rises

UMass Medical School has long been a major component of the UMass system’s research operations, itself a growing priority of the university and a point of pride for its national standing.

The UMass system in total conducted $687 million in research in fiscal 2020, it said Wednesday, though the Worcester-based medical school took up a slightly smaller share of that total. The medical school conducted $279 million worth of research last year, essentially flat, with a drop of less than 1% from the prior year.

Systemwide, UMass research spending rose very slightly year-to-year, an increase of $3.3 million. Such expenditures are up $55 million, or more than 9%, in the past five years.

UMass Medical School typically takes up about 40% of the system’s total research operations. UMass says it’s New England’s fourth biggest college research institution, behind only Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Yale University.

Those research operations also come with licensing and commercialization revenue, which have also been on the rise. In fiscal 2019, that revenue hit nearly $50 million, up 60% over five years.
