UMass Medical School receives $100K to start data center

Grant Welker The University of Massachusetts' medical school in Worcester

Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Medical School were granted $100,000 from the university system to help them improve health management through data analytics.

Cardiologist David McManus, CIO Jomol Matthew, and Silvia Corvera, a diabetes and molecular medicine specialist, used the money to get the Center for Data Driven Discovery and HealthCare (D3 Health) up and running.

D3Health will use data, analytics, and decision support to optimize health administration for individuals and populations through disease prevention, early diagnosis, and disease management, according to UMass, which announced the award Wednesday.

D3Health will use the UMass Medical School Data Lake to generate seed results with which it can pursue private support or funding through federal agencies like the National Institutes of Health. The researchers hope the center will lead to breakthroughs in smart/sensor device data capture, data integration, knowledge extraction, and decision support.

The UMass system awarded a total of $735,000 in grants to faculty science and technology initiatives. McManus is also a principal investigator on the Center for Smart and Connected Society (CS2) at UMass Amherst with computer science Professor Prashant Shenoy. That project was awarded $25,000.
