Top officials at UMass Medical School in Worcester claimed four of the top five highest Massachusetts official compensation packages last year.
Chancellor Michael Collins was the highest-paid state employee, with nearly $1,069,752 in total earnings. One of his top staffers, Terence Flotte, the dean, provost and executive deputy chancellor, made $946,537 and was the second highest-paid state employee.
James Glasheen, the executive vice chancellor for innovation and business development, landed third at $671,268.
All three out-earned the head of the University of Massachusetts system, President Marty Meehan. Meehan earned $659,168 and was fourth.

In all, UMass Medical School claimed 12 of the top 22 highest-paid state officials. All 22 were UMass employees, including UMass Amherst football coach Mark Whipple, who earned $503,220. Whipple stepped down last November.

— 8th - Kenneth Rock, chair and professor of pathology, $551,800
— 11th- Charles Pagnam, vice chancellor, $480,814
— 17th - John Lindstedt, executive vice chancellor of administration and finance, $442,750
— 18th - Joyce Murphy, former executive vice chancellor for Commonwealth Medicine, $429,955 (through August)
— 19th - Charles Matthews, chair and professor for biochemistry and molecular pharmacology, $417,624
— 20th - Greg Wolf, chief information officer, $412,634
— 21st - Jeffrey Geller, professor of psychiatry, $407,760
— 22nd - Catarina Kiefe, chair and professor for population and quantitative health sciences, $400,221
