UMass Medical research provost takes WPI job

Courtesy/WPI Jean King has been named the Peterson Family Dean of Arts and Sciences at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Jean King, the current vice provost for biomedical research at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, has been named the Peterson Family Dean of Arts and Sciences at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

King will start her new post in September, succeeding Karen Kashmanian Oates. She will be responsible for seven academic departments, as well as interdisciplinary programs in environmental science and interactive media and game development.

Over the course of her career, King has held leadership roles at scientific and academic institutions at local, regional, national and international levels. She currently serves on the scientific council for the National Institutes of Health.

In addition to her provost duties at UMass Medical School, King is a tenured professor of psychiatry, radiology and neurology, and director of the Center for Comparative Neuroimaging.

She received her doctorate in neurophysiology from New York University and focused her postdoctoral work at Emory University in Atlanta on the effects of stress and hormone interactions on a variety of cognitive, emotional and social behaviors in human infants.
