UMass Memorial Medical Center has officially handed the keys over to executive vice president and COO Jeff Smith, who took over for outgoing President Patrick Muldoon on Thursday, the hospital announced.
The position, however is only for the interim, as the hospital plans to conduct a nationwide search spanning several months.
Muldoon announced in November his plan to retire at the end of January.
In his previous role held since 2015, Smith worked on the implementation of strategic goals, including cost management, service excellence and clinical quality.
Smith boasts other roles at Wisconsin-based Aurora Health Care, Inc., most recently as the executive vice president and interim chief clinical officer for the health care system.
In that role, Smith was responsible for quality, patient safety, risk management, clinical informatics, academics, research, accreditation, clinical documentation improvement and case management.
In a statement, President and CEO of UMass Memorial Health Care Eric Dickson said Smith’s rise at Aurora will serve him well for his interim position, which comes amid a changing healthcare landscape.
“We are fortunate to have a leader with Jeff’s ability to step in and guide our academic medical center until we find a successor to Patrick Muldoon,” Dickson said.
