The University of Massachusetts Medical School is one of the top U.S. medical schools for primary care education, according to a 2018 ranking report by U.S. News.

UMass Medical tied with the University of Wisconsin-Madison at number 14 for primary care, based on a weighted average of seven indicators, according to the 2018 Best Medical Schools rankings. The rankings were issued based on data provided by 118 medical schools that have a particular focus on primary care. Indicators included ratings from medical schools deans and residency program directors; student selectivity; and the number of graduates entering primary care residencies, among others.

UMass Medical, the state’s only public medical school, beat out private medical schools in Massachusetts in primary care education. Harvard University ranked 16th, while Boston University ranked 34th, and Tufts University ranked 55th.
