UMass earmarked for nat'l language initiative

UMass Memorial Health Care was one of ten hospitals selected to participate in a program designed to improve the level of health care provided to patients speaking limited English.

Funded by the Princeton, NJ-based Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and administered by The George Washington University's School of Public Health and Health Services, Speaking Together: National Language Services Network is one of several programs the Foundation has created to improve the quality of health care in America.

UMass, as with the other hospitals, was selected for its diverse regional population.  The hospital cares for patients speaking any one of 65 languages, including Albanian, Portuguese, Russian, and Vietnamese.

Each participating hospital will receive a grant of up to $60,000, in addition to technical assistance and training using quality improvement measures developed by the George Washington University Dept. of Health Policy.
