Doctors at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester are the first in New England to use a newly approved device that has been used in only 3,000 procedures to treat aneurysms.
The device, Comaneci, was approved for U.S. use by the Food & Drug Administration in May.
The device, made by Israel medical device company Rapid Medical, was used by UMass doctors Ajit Puri, and Francesco Massari in a patient with an aneurysm rupture and intracranial bleeding.
The device acts as a temporary bridge in the aneurysm coiling process while minimizing the risk of coil protrusion or prolapse.
Rapid Medical says the device is the industry’s first-ever adjustable, fully-visible aneurysm remodeling device.
