A UMass Chan Medical School student group helping asylum seekers in Greater Worcester has become formally affiliated with the Worcester school and has now received nonprofit status, opening it up to more grant funding and participation in research.

The group, called UMass Chan Human Rights and Asylum Program, is a re-launching of the previously named Worcester Asylum Clinic, according to a Tuesday announcement from the Worcester medical school. Medical students operate a health clinic and help provide forensic medical examinations, which immigration lawyers use in their advocacy for clients.

“Receiving nonprofit status through our affiliation with UMass Chan makes us eligible for more grants and other funding. The formal status will help solidify us in the Worcester community and build more partnerships with other organizations that are serving the same population. Moving forward, we will be an established resource that people know to go to for asylum seekers who are looking for services,” Dylan Rice,  the clinic’s director of operations and a UMass Chan student, said in the announcement.

The clinic, before its official affiliation and nonprofit nod, opened in 2020. It has assisted more than 100 asylum seekers since then. Affiliating with the university and earning nonprofit status will allow the group to qualify for more grant funding and participate in more research with the UMass Chan Department of Emergency Medicine.
