The T.H. Chan School of Medicine at UMass Chan Medical School in Worcester has been ranked 10th for primary care education by U.S. News & World Report, in its list of America’s best medical schools.
UMass Chan Medical School ranked 47th in research and the Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing placed 44th in the list of best nursing schools for Doctor of Nursing Practice programs.
The primary care ranking is based on the percentage of graduates entering primary care residencies and practicing in primary care specialties. This year, 42% of the UMass Chan class (69 students) entered residencies in internal medicine, family medicine, and pediatrics, according to the school’s Tuesday press release. Another 29 students are going into emergency medicine and obstetrics and gynecology.
“UMass Chan Medical School is experiencing an unprecedented moment in its history,” said Chancellor Michael Collins in a written statement. “This recognition comes as we prepare to graduate a new class of tremendously capable and compassionate physicians and nurses and exceptional scientists trained by a world class faculty who have made our mission their passion.”
U.S. News & World Report ranked 130 medical schools in the country based on faculty resources, academic achievements of entering students, and assessments by schools and residency directors.
University of Washington in Seattle, University of California San Francisco, and University of Minnesota in Minneapolis topped the list for best primary care education among medical schools.
Harvard University in Boston was ranked as the best medical school for research.
