A UMass Chan Medical School professor has received $500,000 from a North Carolina private foundation to research using cholesterol metabolites to regulate the immune system.
Associate Pathology Professor Andrea Reboldi was selected as one of eight Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease awards from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund. The North Carolina-based private foundation’s PATH awards included $500,000 in funding over a five-year period.
The award recognizes researchers who have shown promise in the study of infectious disease mechanisms, and provides funding and resources for continued investigation, according to a July 10 announcement from Worcester-based UMass Chan.
“It’s an extreme honor to be part of a community of scientists working on a similar problem, investigating the pathogenesis of infectious disease. It’s going to be very good to have this community to interact with. Having access to this sort of expertise will be critical to moving our research forward,” Reboldi said in the announcement.
The foundation encourages knowledge-sharing among recipient researchers.
Reboldi joined UMass Chan in Worcester in 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in biotechnology and a master’s degree in immunological biotechnology from the University of Padova in Italy. He holds a PhD in molecular medicine at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine in Bellinzona, Switzerland, and completed his postdoctoral work at the University of California San Francisco.
Other award recipients are based at Tufts University in Medford, Vanderbilt University in Tennessee, University of Pennsylvania, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, New York University School of Medicine, and Yale University in New Haven, according to a May press release from the BWF.
