For the second year in a row, nine of the top 20 highest-paid state employees in Massachusetts are employed by UMass Chan Medical School in Worcester, according to data compiled by the WBJ research department from the Massachusetts State Comptroller’s Office.
Dr. Michael Collins, UMass Chan chancellor and senior vice president of health sciences, dropped from his number one spot in 2022 to second on the list in 2023, with $1.4 million in total earnings. The new highest-paid state employee is the UMass men’s basketball head coach, Frank Martin, who had $1.7 million in total compensation in 2023.
Dr. Terence Flotte, UMass Chan dean, provost and executive deputy chancellor, ranked third on the list with $1.1 million in total earnings
Seven other UMass Chan employees were among the top 20 highest-paid state employees, according to their total compensation in 2023:
Some have salaries through both the medical school and UMass Memorial Health Care. I do not believe that this list includes those numbers.
