Dr. James Ledwith, Family physician and a professor at UMass Chan Medical School in Worcester, has received the Worcester District Medical Society’s Dr. A. Jane Fitzpatrick Community Service award.
The award is set aside for healthcare providers who go above and beyond their professional duties. Ledwith was honored specifically for his work with vulnerable populations in the Worcester area, according to the UMass Chan announcement on Nov. 17.
Ledwith serves as the medical director for a free, student-run medical program at Epworth United Methodist Church in Worcester. He’s served as faculty advisor for UMass Chan’s Free Care Collaborative student group for four years.
Ledwith works as a family physician at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester and is an assistant professor of family medicine and community health at UMass Chan.
“I work to engage first- and second-year medical students before they are under the pressure of the clerkships and worrying about residencies, to talk about primary care, the gaps in primary care and the persistence of need for access for folks who are vulnerable,” said Ledwith in a statement.
Ledwith received the award on Nov. 15.
