UMass Memorial Health Care and the University of Massachusetts Medical School have appointed Michael L. Blute as director of the Cancer Center of Excellence, professor of surgery and interim director of the Division of Urology in the Department of Surgery.
Blute previously served as a professor of urology at the Mayo Clinic campus in Rochester, Minn., where he has been a member of the faculty since 1987. He joined the Mayo Clinc as a surgical resident in 1982.
He specializes in radical prostate surgery and urinary tract reconstruction and has done research in clinical oncology, genetic susceptibility in cancer, and chemoprevention.
Blute is a graduate of the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and the Creighton University School of Medicine.
