UMass appoints chief quality officer

UMass Memorial Medical Center and Medical Group in Worcester have appointed a doctor from Johns Hopkins Hospital to be a new chief quality officer.

Dr. Kimi Kobayashi, whose appointment the hospital announced to providers on Friday, is tasked with ensuring and advocating patient safety. He oversees the Department for Quality and Patient Safety, Department for Clinical Regulatory and Public Reporting, Department of Infection Control, and several key functions within the Department of Risk Management.

Kobayashi was most recently the associate medical director for the Johns Hopkins Capacity Command Center at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Maryland. He grew up in Lexington and was previously the director of inpatient medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

In other area ties, he also holds an undergraduate degree from Tufts University in Boston and a master’s degree in business administration from Harvard Business School, was a resident in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, and chief resident at Newton-Wellesley Hospital.

Kobayashi's role with UMass began Monday.
