UMass Memorial Health on Monday announced the acquisition of the former Beaumont Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center at 378 Plantation St. in Worcester, which cost $23.5 million, according to the Worcester County Registry of Deeds.
The Worcester health group’s expansion is part of a larger plan that existed before the coronavirus pandemic to add 200 medical-surgical beds on UMass Memorial Center’s University campus, the organization said in a press release.
The 85,488-square-foot property is located adjacent to the university campus and still requires significant renovations, as well as approval from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, before it can be used as an inpatient facility, according to the announcement.
In March 2020, UMass used the Plantation Street property to care for COVID-19 patients who were stable but required nursing care. Since then, the Worcester Beaumont residents were transferred to other SALMON Health and Retirement facilities in the region.
The property was sold by Welltower, Inc., a Toledo real estate investment company specializing in healthcare infrastructure. The sale closed August 23.
Welltower purchased the property in 2008 for $10.2 million, according to the Worcester City assessor's database. The City of Worcester’s most recent valuation of the property is $5.5 million.
