Two new faculty scientists at UMass Chan Medical School in Worcester have been elected to the National Academy of Medicine.

Phillip Zamore and Roger Davis are two of 90 new electees to the D.C. based academy. The NAM is a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization set up to provide objective insights on evolving matters related to medicine. Election recognizes major career contributions to the fields of health care, medicine, and public health. Scientists in the academy advise public policy decisions related to their field of study.

Zamore, chair and professor of RNA therapeutics, has been with UMass Chan since 1999 and is credited with a major discovery in RNA silencing, according to a Monday announcement from UMass Chan.

Davis joined UMass Chan in 1984 and is chair and professor of molecular medicine. His research has focused on signaling pathways related to arthritis, cancer, stroke, heart disease and diabetes.

Three other UMass Chan faculty members, Katherine Fitzgerald, Job Dekker, and Dr. Robert Brown are already members of the academy.
