Two Marlborough Electronics Firms Team Up

Marlborough-based electronics manufacturing components vendor Conti-Younger Associates nearly doubled in size when it acquired Focus Sales Inc. of Marlborough earlier this month.

Combining the two small companies provides an expanded line of products and is a move Conti-Younger hopes will deepen customer relationships and drive growth.

A Match Made In Marlborough

Conti-Younger's acquisition of Focus adds three employees to its existing staff of four, said Valerie Brennan, inside sales representative with Conti-Younger.

One of those additions is John LaPan, a vice president with Focus for the past 29 years who retains that title under the new arrangement.

LaPan said the acquisition will further strengthen the firm and help it compete in a marketplace with uncertain global economic ramifications.

"There's always the issue of outsourcing," LaPan said. "It's a difficult situation, with so many depressed markets, that everybody's feeling it."

Now, he said, the small size of both companies in the acquisition means the entrepreneurial spirit of both is kept alive in an arrangement that better primes the combined organization for growth.

One-Stop Shop

Conti-Younger, which has been in business for 47 years, represents a number of product lines that serve customers in the medical, industrial, and server electronic device markets. Those lines include power supplies, LED chips, semiconductors and high-voltage diodes, among others.

The company carries lines such as Fuji semiconductor, Corcom — a Tyco company — and Beyond Tek.

The acquisition of Focus Sales, which focuses on the same market, adds relationships with PalPilot, PowerTip LCDs, Seiko and other manufacturers — and the acquisition offers customers a more diverse range of choices, said Brennan, the inside sales rep.

"In the electronics field, normally one product would go with one rep. But if you were to look at our lines, we are a solutions provider," Brennan said.

Strength in Numbers

It's this broader range of solutions Conti-Younger is now able to provide that will increase its sustainability in the marketplace, LaPan said.

With Focus personnel now settled into Conti-Younger offices at 25 Newton St., several tasks remain. "We've integrated line cards, our new website will be up very shortly and we're integrating our CRM (customer service) system," he said.

Sales staff must begin reintroducing the expanded company to the market and at the same time, bring new lines to the attention of the existing Conti-Younger customer base, said LaPan. And with the new products, the company will now be more attractive to larger manufacturers, he said.

"Where it can be difficult to grow as individual entities," he said, "now we hope to achieve growth rather quickly."
