Twin Cities Plaza, anchored by a Hannaford supermarket and straddling the Fitchburg-Leominister line, is undergoing an overhaul for a more modern look and landscaping.

The plaza also includes a Bob's Stores, Planet Fitness and Kappy's Liquors, in addition to about two dozen tenants in all. A major vacancy opened up at the plaza last fall with the closure of Kmart.

"We're trying to create a sense of community," said Paul DiGeronimo, the principal broker for plaza owner Geronimo Properties, which itself is based on a second-floor office unit at Twin Cities Plaza. "It's going to be a whole different look to the plaza."

Blue mansard roofs, a relic of the 1980s, will go. In its place will be masonry materials in earth tones, as well as awnings and more modern signs, and landscaping along roadways and parking areas. A outdoor gathering area with tables and Wi-Fi is slated to be built in an area outside Planet Fitness.

The project is slated to cost around $4 million.

Facade work has begun this month on the two-story building where offices are located, and will continue toward where Planet Fitness, Kappy's Liquors and others are located. That work is scheduled to be complete by October. Other buildings, including where Hannaford and a Bob's Stores are located and where Kmart was, will be done in a later phase next year.

A smaller building where Payless ShoeSource and others are already features the new style that will adorn all buildings int he 370,000-square-foot plaza.

Twin Cities Plaza sits immediately north of Route 2 at Exit 30, on a commercial stretch that is Merriam Avenue in Leominister and Whalon Street in Fitchburg. It opened in 1970.

The plaza is fully leased with the exception of the former Kmart space, which the retailer maintains control over, DiGeronimo said.

Geronimo Properties also owns Parkhill Plaza off Franklin Road and Electric Avenue in Fitchburg, and the Johnny Appleseed plaza on Route 12 in Leominister.
