Tufts Vet Hospital Wins Trauma Center Designation

The Foster Hospital for Small Animals at Tufts University in Grafton has been designated as one of nine provisional veterinary trauma centers approved nationwide by The American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ACVECC).

The veterinary trauma centers were designated in an effort by the ACVECC to improve treatment outcomes of animal trauma cases, according to a statement by Tufts. Along with Tufts, trauma centers were designated in California, Florida, Illinois, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

The centers will define standards of care, and provide information to improve trauma patient management and outcomes, Tufts said.

"This new designation creates a standard of care in veterinary medicine that didn't previously exist and provides pet owners with important information in the event of a trauma-related emergency," said Armelle de Laforcade, a critical care veterinarian at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts. "Receiving care at a certified trauma center with the necessary resources in place may help improve survival rates for the most severely traumatized patient."

The criteria for designated trauma centers include round-the-clock ability to manage small animal trauma patients, and the availability of board-certified specialists for consultation seven days a week in the fields of emergency and critical care, surgery and radiology, according to Tufts.

The ACVECC will work with the trauma centers throughout the first year to ensure all requirements are met, Tufts said.
