Try These Ways To Handle Pressure

Question: Currently I'm working for a financial company where there's a high volume of pressure and stress. This environment is new to me and seems impossible to work around. To top things off I have been asked to provide reports during our weekly meetings. During these meetings my mind freezes when I have to think on the spot and I don't come off well in front of my boss. What can I do to become more comfortable and confident while answering questions on the spot?

Answer: A lot of people have trouble thinking on their feet. Don't feel disappointed when your mind goes blank. Learn your behavior and perfect it. Try the following suggestions and you'll be able to control the situation instead of being controlled by it.

1) Identify personal obstacles. Create a list of situations where you needed to think under pressure. Recall how you handled each and what was going on in your mind at the time. Think about how you could handle the same situation again. Reflect back and see what prevented you from managing the situation the way you wanted.

2) Relax. Practice relaxation techniques. In stressful situations your body will be able to relax faster. Visualize yourself in a stressful situation where you are completely stress free and in control. Breathing exercises can be very helpful.

3) Buy time . Asks questions for clarification and rephrase to check for understanding. Don't be afraid to take time to reflect. It's better for you to fully understand than to respond as quickly as possible.

4) Use confident gestures. See how your body reacts in stressful situations and try to control it. Keep eye contact and be aware of your body language. Remember don't cross your legs or arms and don't hunch your shoulders.
