Total Wine & More has opened its third Massachusetts location at White City Shopping Center on Route 9 in Shrewsbury.
The chain calls itself the nation's largest independent wine, beer and liquor retailer, and plans to have more than 170 locations by the end of the year. In Massachusetts, Total Wine is also located in Natick and Everett.
The new Shrewsbury location had its grand opening Thursday. The 20,000 square-foot location has thousands bottles of wine and beer, the company said. It will employ 50 people, most full-time.
More changes are coming to the west end of Route 9 in Shrewsbury this year. Lakeway Commons, on the former Spag's site, will open later this year, anchored by a Whole Foods Market. It will also have a Visionworks, Sweet Pizza, Unibank and Tavern in the Square.
