Total coronavirus cases in Worcester County surpasses 7,000, as Thursday brings 20 new deaths

The Worcester County coronavirus death toll has risen by 20, with 204 new cases, according to Massachusetts Department of Public Health data. 

Thursday’s 20 deaths follow the record 34 fatalities recorded Wednesday. The total death toll in Worcester County has now hit 385. Statewide deaths increased by 132 bringing the total to 4,552.

The new cases in Worcester County have exceeded 7,000 while rising by 2% Thursday, bringing the total to 7,196. Across Massachusetts, cases rose by 1,696, or 2%, raising the total to 73,721. The daily increase in cases this week continues to be significantly lower than April.

The Department of Public Health also reports 11,993 new coronavirus tests given Thursday with 351,632 overall.

The City of Worcester reported 110 new cases, a 4% increase bringing the total to 2,698.

UMass Memorial Health Care and Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester reported 277 total cases Thursday, with 118 in intensive care. The hospitals have seen six new deaths making the total tally to 150, and 12 new employees have tested positive with 228 overall.

MetroWest Medical Center in Natick and Framingham report 59 suspected and confirmed cases, and Milford Regional Medical Center reports 39, according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. 

Other Central Massachusetts hospitals such as Harrington Hospital, Heywood Hospital, and Health Alliance in Leominster report a total of 24 confirmed or suspected cases. 

Nationwide, there are more than 1.2 million cases, and the death toll has risen past 75,000 according to Johns Hopkins University in Maryland. Globally, there are more than 3.8 million cases and 268,999 deaths.
