Following the unexpected death of Dr. Michael Green, UMass Chan Medical School in Worcester has selected two faculty members to fill the void left by the former vice provost for strategic research initiatives and professor and chair of molecular, cell and cancer biology.
A priority for both appointees is the continuation of Green’s work to achieve National Cancer Institute designation for the UMass Cancer Center, where Green was director.
Dr. Jonathan Gerber will serve as director of the UMass Cancer Center, and Michelle Kelliher will be interim chair of the department of molecular, cell and cancer biology, according to a March 1 announcement from UMass Chan.
Gerber was previously the medical director at the cancer center and is a professor of medicine and molecular, cell cancer biology. He is founding director of the Program in Hematology and Oncology Research, and chief of the Division of Hematology and Oncology in the Department of Medicine. He received his medical degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore.
Kelliher is a professor of molecular, cell and cancer biology and co-leader of the Cancer Genetics Research Program at UMass Chan. Kelliher holds a PhD from Tufts University in Medford, and completed her postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School in Boston.
