The first location for the new discount home goods store Homesense from TJX will open Aug. 17 at Framingham's Shoppers World.

The location announced Tuesday is the first of four planned through this fall.

Three other planned Homesense stores are in East Hanover, N.J., opening in September, Ocean Township, N.J., opening in October, and Westwood later in the year.

Homesense has a grand opening for the Framingham store planned for 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 17. Regular store hours will be Monday through Saturday, from 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

TJX says Homesense will offer "on-trend, high-quality home merchandise at a great value" that will complement, not compete with, its 600-store sister chain, HomeGoods. Homesense will have expanded departments including large-scale furniture, lighting and art, and what it calls a "general store," with tool kits, door stops, storage goods and other products.

The home furnishings retail sector grew by 3.5 percent between 2012 and '17, with $34 billion in revenue, according to research firm IBISWorld.

The retail giant, which has its headquarters in Framingham and Marlborough, has an existing Homesense line with 109 stores in Canada and 46 in Europe, but the company says the United States iteration will be different.

Homesense will start slow, but TJX growth otherwise is booming.

TJX said earlier this year it could expand by 1,800 stores in the long term, which would be about a 50-percent jump from today's 3,800. This budget year alone, which ends at the end of next January, TJX plans 250 new stores, including 65 T.J. Maxx or Marshalls locations and 81 HomeGoods, in addition to the four Homesense locations.

Much of TJX's growth has come while its retail competitors continue struggling, including Macy's, JCPenney and Sears, which combined have closed hundreds of stores. TJX's first-quarter sales, announced in May, rose by 3 percent to $7.8 billion. Net income was $536 million.
