Framingham-based TJX Cos. is continuing to pay employees of Puerto Rico stores as they remain closed while most of the island is without power due to Hurricane Maria.
It’s unclear how many of the company’s 29 stores on the island are closed due to a lingering widespread power outage, but employees are still getting paid, said spokeswoman Erika Tower.
“Based on the devastating situation in Puerto Rico, we can confirm that we have continued to pay our TJ Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods Associates on the island,” Tower said. “We believe it is the right thing for us to do under these circumstances.”
Citing the quiet period before the company’s third-quarter earnings report scheduled to be released Nov. 14, Tower wouldn’t disclose details, including how much the employees are paid or how many stores are closed.
News of the company continuing to pay employees surfaced after a Puerto Rican father posted to the #PuertoRicoStrong Facebook page last month about Marshalls paying his son even though the store was closed.
Several media outlets report that 70 percent of the island is still without power after the Category 5 hurricane destroyed the electrical grid and killed dozens.
