Discount retailer The TJX Cos. Inc. said its first quarter profit increased to $209 million from $198 million a year ago as sales increased by 1 percent to $4.35 billion.
Same store sales for the Framingham-based company increased 2 percent over the first quarter of the previous fiscal year.
The company said an increase in customer traffic at nearly all of its divisions, as well as efforts to keep inventories lean and expenses under tight control contributed to the positive results.
TJX operates T.J. Maxx, A.J. Wright, HomeGoods and other discount chains.
