Tips On How To Green Your Office

Is making your office a more environmentally friendly place one of those things that never quite reaches the top of your to-do list? It’s not as difficult as you might think to adjust your work habits and make a significant difference.

These tips from the Sierra Club’s blog, The Green Life, can help you save energy, resources and — in many cases — money too.

  • See the light. Buy Energy Star-rated light bulbs and fixtures, which use at least two-thirds less energy than regular lighting, and install timers or motion sensors that automatically shut off lights when they’re not needed.
  • When in doubt, turn it off. As long as it’s OK with the IT guys, you should turn off your computer, and the power strip it’s plugged into, every night. And set your computer to sleep when it’s not in use during the day, rather than just running a cute screen saver.
  • Careful how you print. Print on both sides of paper, and use chlorine-free paper with a high post-consumer recycled content. Even better, don’t print out documents if you could just as easily e-mail them or share them through your network.
  • Limit time on the road. Use public transportation for your commute and business travel whenever possible. You can also invest in videoconferencing equipment to reduce the need for face-to-face meetings in distant locations.
  • Watch how you eat. Switch from disposable dishes and silverware to reusable ones. Buy Fair Trade and organic coffee and tea for the office kitchen, and use organic and local foods at company events. Instead of bottled water, filter tap water.
