Members of the Class of 2010 might want to consider backbacking through Europe-or setting up an apartment in mom's basement. A new survey of human resources executives by outplacement consultancy Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc. suggests that prospects for graduates this year are little, if any, better than they were in 2009.
About half of those polled said this year's outlook is about the same as last year's. Forty percent said it's better, and just 10 percent said it's worse.
The survey included about 100 human resource professionals in a variety of industries.
Challenger, Gray & Christmas said the sitution for new graduates is made worse by the fact that they will be competing with people who graduated with similar degrees over the past few years but became unemployed during the recession. Already, the firm said, there are more than five job seekers for every opening.
Asked what type of training would best prepare graduates for the current job market, 26 percent of respondents said health care. Another 18.4 percent said business administration. Next most popular were computer science, accounting/finance and engineering, with more than 10 percent choosing each of those three options.
