Thousands Remain Without Electricity

National Grid, which provides electricity to many Central Massachusetts towns, reported 16,715 customers in Worcester County remained without power as of 11:24 a.m. today.

National Grid said at 11:45 a.m. that it had restored about 92 percent of the 421,000 customers affected by the weekend snowstorm. It said it has more than 3,000 workers in affected communities working to restore power.

Central Massachusetts communities with significant outages included Worcester with 4,301, Sturbridge with 2,730, Warren with 1,678, Pepperell with 1,343, Harvard with 1,136 and Charlton with 878.

Meanwhile, NSTAR reported Thursday afternoon that it had finished restorations on schedule to more than 200,000 of its customers. The utility said it will send 73 of its contractor crews to the Western part of the state to help with restoration efforts there.

UPDATE: Telephone, cable and internet provider Charter Communications reported just before 4 p.m. today that it is repairing between 1,500 and 2,000 damaged cable lines in storm-affected New England areas per day.

Charter said it could not say how many customers were affected by the storm or when services will be fully functional, but said its crews have had to wait for electricity to be restored in order to fix its own services.
