A New York City think tank and foundation on Thursday declared Marlborough as one of the two most intelligent cities in the U.S. and top 21 worldwide for information and communications technology.
The Intelligent Community Forum, which advocates for information technology best practices, has released its Smart21 Communities of 2016, which evaluates global cities based on their success in the broadband economy. Only two American cities made the list: Marlborough and San Diego.
The communities were evaluated on six indicators: broadband, knowledge workforce, innovation, digital equality, sustainability and advocacy. The Smart21 will be narrowed down to a Top 7 Intelligent Communities of the Year, ultimately competing for the 2016 Intelligent Community of the Year prize announced in June in Columbus, Ohio.
In addition to Marlborough and San Diego, the other cities on the list were Armidale, Australia; Brabantse Kempen Region, The Netherlands; Hamilton, Canada; Hsinschu County, Taiwan; Ipswich, Australia; Jonkoping, Sweden; Kaohsiung, Taiwan; Lambton County, Canada; Lethbridge, Canada; Montreal, Canada; Mulheim an der Ruhr, Germany; New Taipei City, Taiwan; Oshawa, Canada; Ottawa, Canada; Surrey, Canada; Taitung County, Taiwan; Whanganui, New Zealand; and Winnipeg, Canada.
