Crust Bakeshop in Worcester lost several thousands of dollars Sunday night when an unknown number of people broke into the bakery’s West Boylston Street location, owner Alexis Kelleher said on Tuesday.
Perpetrators smashed through the shop’s double-paned glass doors, took change from the register, and ultimately broke into the safe, which was housing a few day’s worth of deposits after a busy holiday weekend. Other than the damage to the door, the shop’s interior was left unharmed.
Kelleher estimated the thieves made off with a few thousand dollars. Although the shop retains its credit card sales from that weekend, the timing – when business starts to pick up after a post-holiday slump – made the break-in sting worse, she said.
“We always look to Valentine’s Day on the horizon as the next big thing, and we had had a really really great weekend,” Kelleher said.
Kelleher said she and her business partner Nate Rossi received a call from police notifying them of the break-in shortly before 9 p.m. on Sunday night, while many were tuning into the Super Bowl.
Several other businesses on West Boylston Street were broken into on the same evening, police told the pair.
Crust has since received an outpouring of support from customers, she said, with many reaching out or otherwise stopping into the store on Monday. Although the break-in has left Kelleher feeling vulnerable, she said she remembered her parents dealing with similar issues while running George’s Coney Island.
“I remember my parents having to go in in the middle of the night because they'd get phone calls, or there would be a window broken,” Kelleher said.
In the meantime, she and Rossi are focused on moving forward and handling entryway repair, as well as feeling grateful for the community’s response.
