Waltham-based Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., which has several locations in Central Massachusetts, reported net income of $268.5 million and revenue of $2.7 billion for the third quarter.
A year earlier, the company reported a $221.2-million profit on $2.5 billion in revenue. Revenue was about 1 percent lower than expected due to unfavorable currency exchanges during the quarter.
The company said its growth has been the result of aggressive investment in new products, expansion in emerging markets and acquisitions.
The markets for scientific instruments, equipment and diagnostics have been particularly strong, the company said.
Thermo Fisher has about 35,000 employees and makes laboratory instruments and software for pharmaceutical and biotech firms, as well as hospitals, clinical diagnostics labs, universities and the government.
