The Winchendon School, a private day and boarding high school with campuses in Winchendon and New York, has promoted longtime employee Sean Duncan to executive director and head of school at-large starting in the 2024-2025 school year.

A 15-year Winchendon employee, Duncan previously served as the head of school of the school’s Massachusetts campus. He was the founding head of school of its first satellite campus, located in New York City, and was the founder and director of the school’s DoIT Academy, according to a Monday release from The Winchendon School.

Duncan succeeds previous Executive Director John Kerney, who served in the role for 15 years.

“I hope to continue the work John has so passionately advanced and help our students become their most inquisitive, compassionate and well-rounded selves. I am incredibly humbled and proud to lead The Winchendon School into its next 100 years,” Duncan said in the release.

Throughout his 16-year tenure with the high school, Kerney played a pivotal role in shaping the school’s programming including in entrepreneurial education, learning support, service learning, according to the release. He oversaw the construction of the campus’ Faculty Hall, Dockery Dormitory, and turf athletic fields and worked to diversify the school’s student population. Kerney earned $343,525 in compensation from his role at the school in fiscal 2022, according to the nonprofit data provider Guidestar.

“The reason we have such excitement for the future is that we’ve seen how Sean, throughout his tenure, has orchestrated deeply engaging learning opportunities for Winchendon students in both Massachusetts and New York,” John Hipp, chair of The Winchendon School Board of Trustees, said in the release. “He and John have worked in tandem to take the school to new heights, and Sean’s compassionate, meticulous leadership will continue that upward trajectory well into the future.”

Duncan earned his bachelor’s degree from Whitman College in Washington and master’s degrees from Middlebury Bread Loaf School of English in Vermont and Columbia University in New York City.

The Winchendon School generated $17.6 million in revenue in fiscal 2022 and had $48 million in assets, according to Guidestar. The New York campus generated an additional $3.2 million.
